At HITS, artificial intelligence (AI) is not a current trend, but a long-established practice: Several groups have been working with machine learning methods for a number of years, and the institute has had its own “Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence” research group since 2022. Group leader Jan Stühmer not only conducts research in this area, however, but also shares his expertise with the general public – most recently at the “Science Notes” on the topic of AI and language, an event format at which science meets club culture.
The scientific scope of HITS is illustrated by a current research project on massive stars and the active collaboration of HITS researchers within the EBRAINS infrastructure on molecular signaling in neuroscience.
In the “Beyond the Limits” section, we introduce US astrophysicist Robert Fisher, who is spending his sabbatical at HTS and working as a guest scientist in the Physics of Stellar Objects group.
About HITS
HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
