With AI towards new cardiac drugs

28. November 2023

In a recently published perspective (“Aktuelle Kardiologie” 2023; 12(06): 450 – 458), researchers in the “Molecular and Cellular Modeling” group at HITS and the “Section of Molecular and Translational Cardiology” at Heidelberg University Hospital, who collaborate in the Heidelberg-based Informatics4Life partnership funded by the Klaus Tschira Foundation, examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can contribute to the discovery and development of new precision medicines for heart disease. AI-enabled drug candidates for noncardiac conditions are already in clinical trials. Whether these candidates will show noticeably better performance in clinical trials still remains to be seen. In general, AI seems predestined to help restructure the rather inefficient traditional drug discovery and development process. However, approaches that elucidate mechanistic causes for the effects of drugs, for example by concerted use with physics-based simulations, will be key to engineering drugs against complex medical conditions such as heart disease.

AI-driven drug discovery and development.

About HITS

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
