The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig welcomes Anna Wienhard as its new director. Her newly established research group focuses on fundamental research in the areas of geometry, group theory, and dynamics, and explores applications and interactions with other sciences. Anna Wienhard will be leaving from Heidelberg, where she was professor for mathematics at Heidelberg University and associated group leader at the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS), in November. Since 2020, she has been Scientific Chairperson of the Heidelberg Laureate Forum Foundation.
“We are grateful and proud of Anna, who served for 7 years as associated group leader at HITS”, says Deputy Scientific Director Tilmann Gneiting. “The position of a Max Planck Director is a suitable career step for this outstanding scientist.” For the time being, jointly appointed members of Anna Wienhards´s “Groups and Geometry” group will stay at HITS, still being involved in interdisciplinary projects with other groups.

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
