HITS NLP goes Linguistics!
Members of the NLP group will have two presentations at the upcoming workshop Word formation and discourse structure at the Department of German Linguistics at Leipzig University.
The workshop’s intended audience is ‘real’ linguists (not the computational kind), so this will be a great opportunity to reach researchers from a different, though closely related field.
PhD students Wei Zhao, Kevin Mathews, and Haixia Chai will present their work on “Improving Coreference Resolution with Word Formation”. Coreference is an important linguistic means for establishing well-structured discourse, and computational coreference resolution is one of the longest-standing topics in the HITS NLP group.
Research associate Mark-Christoph Müller will present a “Proposal for Explicit Word Formation Annotation in Discourse Corpora”. Linguistic annotation has also been a core topic in the group for quite some time.
About HITS
HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects.
