Alone and yet together! On 26-28 June 2020, the running team of the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies (HITS) will again participate in the annual NCT Run, the charity event for the fight against cancer. This year, the run will be organized as a virtual three-day-event. Separated by distance but united in spirit, more than 5000 participants will run individually (or in small groups), following a route of their own choice. For the 34-strong team “The HITSters” – running in Germany and France – there is a particularly good reason this year to take their slogan “Run beyond the limits!” seriously: On the occasion of its 25th anniversary, the Klaus Tschira Foundation has decided to generously sponsor each kilometer run by a member of HITS with 25 Euros and donate the whole amount to the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT).
HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
