Lucas Czech, PhD student in the HITS group Scientific Computing (SCO), won the Heidelberg Science Slam at O’Reilly’s Heidelberg on 18 November 2014. More than 100 people attended the event and listened to his talk on speech recognition. Lucas presented some of the fundamental techniques and models that are used to make computers understand human speech. The applications of speech recognition range from spotting certain words in phone calls to searching the internet through voice commands.
Lucas studied Computer Science in Karlsruhe, New Zealand and the United States. In July 2014, he joined HITS to do his PhD in the field of evolutionary bio-informatics in Alexandros Stamatakis‘ research group.

HITS, the Heidelberg Institute for Theoretical Studies, was established in 2010 by physicist and SAP co-founder Klaus Tschira (1940-2015) and the Klaus Tschira Foundation as a private, non-profit research institute. HITS conducts basic research in the natural, mathematical, and computer sciences. Major research directions include complex simulations across scales, making sense of data, and enabling science via computational research. Application areas range from molecular biology to astrophysics. An essential characteristic of the Institute is interdisciplinarity, implemented in numerous cross-group and cross-disciplinary projects. The base funding of HITS is provided by the Klaus Tschira Foundation.
