Computational Statistics (CST)
The research focus of the Computational Statistics group at HITS lies on the theory and practice of forecasting. As the future is uncertain, forecasts should be probabilistic in nature, i.e., they should take the form of probability distributions over future quantities or events. Accordingly, we are witnessing a transdisciplinary change of paradigms from deterministic or point forecasts to probabilistic forecasts. The CST group seeks to provide guidance and leadership in this transition by developing both the theoretical foundations of the science of forecasting and cutting-edge statistical methodology, along with applications. Meteorological and epidemiological forecasts are key examples. In this context, the group maintains research contacts and collaborative relations with colleagues at our university home, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), nationally, and worldwide.
